Flight Attendant FAQ

Hey friends!

As some of you know, I am now working full time as a flight attendant at a major US-based airline. Per my disclaimer, I won’t refer to it directly on my website. But I’ve received a lot of similar questions about my new lifestyle and thought I would tackle some of the most popular ones here!

1. Do you fly for free?

Not really, but there are reduced fare options that most airlines offer to their employees!

2. What are the steps to take to become a flight attendant?

It depends on the airline! If you’re interested in becoming a flight attendant, I’d suggest doing research on different airlines and find more direction on their employment pages. Each company (and hub!) has a unique culture to it, so take that into account as well. I’ve shared my story which you can read here.

3. Is it competitive?

This also depends on the airline. My company received over 280,000 applications for 1,500 positions the year I applied. But other airlines are not as competitive.

4. Do you have to speak another language to be a flight attendant?

Nope! At my airline, we try to staff certain routes with foreign language speakers (aka French for France, Spanish for Latin America, etc). So I get a small bonus when I work a French route, but by no means is it a requirement!

5. What is a typical work week?

My work week changes constantly! Flight attendant trips are typically 1-3 days. So I may work 6 days in a row (two 3-days back to back) or I may just have one 1-day trip then 6 days off. That’s the beauty of being a flight attendant, my work schedule is flexible and I’m able to swap my trips around if I need to work more/less.

6. What is your usual route?

Most of the time it takes quite a few years of seniority (30 years give or take) to be able to request and consistently work the same route. But because I speak French, I am able to request and consistently work (3-4 times a month) a trip to France. But the trip is never the same as the crew, airplane, days of the week, etc. are always changing.

7. What is your pet peeve [as a flight attendant]?

Entitlement or a lack of gratitude.

8. Do you love your job / company?

YES! I couldn’t speak higher of my company and I never knew I could feel so fulfilled / happy in a career. I can easily see myself doing this to some degree the rest of my life.

9. Do you have a favorite plane?

I do! I love flying the Boeing 777.

10. How often are you actually home?

I’m home about 20 days a month. It depends on the types of trips I am working.

Hope this shed some light on my lifestyle! If I missed something you’re curious about, drop your question in the comment section below or send me a message on any of my platforms @beyondutah!
